“In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will only love what we understand and we will only understand what we are taught.”

Baba Dioum, Senegalese Conservationist

Education is a vital component of any conservation or ecological restoration project, so it is equally important to Poutiri Ao ō Tāne. Once educated about the value of the natural environment, people become conservation ambassadors for the rest of the community. This initiative provides numerous opportunities for engagement and education.

Education matters

Education providers are already active in the region: Guthrie-Smith Outdoor Education Centre is an institution at Tutira; and ECOED has established a purpose built education facility at Opouahi Scenic Reserve. Local schools participate in environmental education.

Boundary Stream Mainland Island and Opouahi Scenic Reserve both provide the general public with opportunities to see threatened wildlife up close. Boundary Stream actively supports international researchers and volunteers to share knowledge about threatened species conservation.
