Hastings District Council

Hastings District is a very special part of New Zealand, which is characterised by the dramatic coastline, rolling hill country, fertile plains, river valleys and rugged mountain ranges. The district has a long history as a food producing region, and is commonly referred to as the ‘Fruit Bowl of New Zealand’.

Hastings District Council undertakes a wide range of activities on behalf of the community which are aimed at promoting the social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing of the district. Creating an environment which promotes sustainable business growth is also fundamental to ensuring the community continues to prosper.

The district has many outstanding natural features including the iconic Te Mata Peak, Cape Kidnappers, the Tukituki Valley and Ocean Beach along with significant wetlands and some of the most beautiful coastal areas in the country. The quality of the environment will define our lifestyle in the future and the district council is vigilant in the management of these areas.

Economic growth is vitally important in creating lifestyle opportunities for Hastings residents. A growing economy means more jobs for those who live and work in the district and provides the impetus for businesses to relocate to Hastings. Council’s role is to provide the infrastructure which encourages business and economic growth.

The extremely fertile Heretaunga Plains is home to the regions food and wine industry. From orchards and vineyards to meat and wool production, the plains support many flourishing businesses which, in turn are supporting a vibrant and expanding food processing industry.

Hastings District Council is committed to continually improving the wellbeing of the community while protecting and enhancing the environment through a sustainable development approach.
