Our History
Tangitu ki te moana
Maungaharuru ki uta
Mohaka te awa
Ko Ngati Pahauwera te iwi

The above Tauparapara describes the essence of Ngati Pahauwera from the mountains to the sea and from the river to the iwi. Maungaharuru are the inland ranges the source of our forest foods and resources. Tangitu refers to our coastal territory and fisheries resources. Kaumatua and kuia in the Waitangi Tribunal Mohaka river claim hearing described the Mohaka River as a taonga of inestimable cultural and spiritual value to Ngati Pahauwera. The value Ngati Pahauwera place on the river is expressed on marae in waiata, Haka, Tauparapara and in the pepeha (sayings). Such expressions include: Ko au te awa, Ko te awa ko au. I am the river and the river is me. Te tapu o Irakewa. (Made sacred by Irakewa) Mohaka Tomairangi, (Mohaka the unifier). Mohaka te Waiora. (Mohaka the life giver).
